The Continuing Story:

Dimensional Dream

The story thus far...

Stars hovered high in the sky. Crickets sang their songs undisturbed.

Kendra dreamed she was floating on a raft on a lake in the woods. She could feel Mason's breath on her neck as he slept next to her. A large fish raised it's head above the waterline as if to speak. Searing pain stabbed her outstretched hand and she screamed. -- DK

Gathering her wits, Kendra looked at her hand. The fish wrapped its mouth around her hand like a glove. She began to shake her hand furiously. The fish would not release her hand. She panicked. "What do I do?" She thought anxiously. -- AR

Kendra's eyes popped open and it took several long seconds to recognize the ceiling of the lab. As the reality of what had occurred came to her, she looked quickly to her right at Mason. He also seemed to be waking from the experiment. Dimensional Dreaming they called it and this concluded their fourth run. Dr. Kendra White and Dr. Mason Marshall were the only two who had successfully pulled images into their minds, or as Mason put it, pulled their minds into an image. They would have to argue that point later however. Kendra looked at her hand once more. There should not have been any pain. Why had she experienced pain while in dream-stasis? She never should have let the military scientists toy with their invention. She looked at Mason as his eyes cracked slightly open and another thought occurred. Why had Mason been sleeping so close to her on their dream raft? She remembered the sensation of his breath on her neck and turned away as his eyes came fully open. -- BB

Kendra went to work the next day feeling dull and anxious. Her hand still ached some, but there were no marks, so it couldn't have been completely realistic. Mason met her at the door as they walked into the lab. He had a strange glint in his eye, as if he knew something he could hold over her? He leaned over her and whispered in her ear ... "we'll have to do a repeat, won't we?"

Kendra went into the lab, trying at the same time to ignore what he had said, and figure it out. Neither was working. The project director met them both in the adjacent conference room and started the meeting: "We've been working on a glitch in the experiment." -- MK
